Frequently Asked Questions

Can digital editions work for newspapers?

Definitely. We even have a dedicated data-entry team working round the clock to expedite newspaper digital editions. We can even restrict views to only your paid subscribers or tie your digital edition's user database directly to your website's user database.

How does your data-entry team know what to link?

By default, our data-entry team scans for all URLs and email addresses and creates links for those. They also look for anything that appears to be an ad and marks it as an Advertiser so it will appear in the advertisers menu and tracked accordingly. Any article they find will be converted into a text feed and added to the Contents menu.

Special instructions can also be supplied to the data-entry team when you upload your PDF files. Examples of special instructions are:

Make sure the Contents menu matches the Table of Contents on page X, Make sure the Advertisers menu matches the Ad Index on page X, Link all of the logos on page X to the list below (provide a list of logos and URLs), Link all of the products in the publication to the attached spreadsheet (provide a list of URLs, page numbers and SKUs)

How long does it take to setup a digital edition?

You can actually preview your digital edition shortly after you upload your PDF. After you've approved the conversion of your digital edition and paid for the data-entry services, your digital edition will be completed in no more than 3 business days. If you're a daily newspaper, then don't worry about the turnaround time. We have a dedicated data-entry team turning newspaper digital editions overnight.

How does the text search work?

If your PDF contains actual text (not outlined or rasterized text) then our data-entry team will create article text feeds of all of your text and will make the text searchable from the toolbar. After you Activate an issue, the searchable text will be indexed and will become functional in about 2-3 hours.

What is the difference between zoom factors?

We offer four different conversion methods to help with the overall performance of your digital editions:

Vector Zoom - This method uses the actual text (requires actual fonts and text, does not work with rasterized text) to create crisp, sharp text at any zoom level and also provides a zoom slider bar up to 400%. Vector zoom offers the highest quality of all of the conversion methods however, masked type may cause odd results. Contact us if you need assistance on correcting any masked type issues.

Zoom Factor 1 - This conversion method creates a smaller zoom size for quicker loading. Because the zoom size is smaller, pages will load much quicker.

Zoom Factor 2 - This conversion method creates a slightly larger zoom size for better page detail.

Zoom Factor 3 - This conversion method gives you the same zoom amount as the vector conversion and a 400% slider bar. The only difference between Zoom Factor 3 and Vector Zoom is how the type is converted. If you have excessive amounts of masked type, then we recommend using Zoom Factor 3 over the Vector Zoom.

What file formats can be converted into a digital edition?

For the quickest turnaround time and standard pricing, we require a single, multi-page PDF file without crop marks or bleed (Click here for a complete spec sheet). If you need assistance converting PDFs, InDesign, Quark or PSD files to the appropriate formats then we can convert them for you for an additional $229 per issue.

Can digital editions work for catalogs?

Absolutely. By linking products in a catalog to the product purchasing center of your website, you can quickly shorten the amount of time it takes for readers to navigate to the product they want to purchase. Simply send us a list of where you want the products linked to and our data-entry team will set it up for you.

How much does a digital edition cost?

We have several different price structures, but they are all based on a per page rate. So if you have a 96 page magazine and want us to setup the links for you and you want your logo in the toolbar instead of ours, then your cost would be $4 per page x 96 = $384.

Also, if you don't have time to create a single, multi-page PDF file or convert your native files, we can do that for an additional $229 per issue.

What is the Do-It-Yourself price structure for?

If you have would like to setup the links, menus, articles feeds, searchable, text, emails and URLs yourself, then you can save a few dollars and you'll have access to all the same tools our data-entry team uses. Simply go through the document page-by-page, highlight the areas you need to link and insert the appropriate links. Typically, you can set up a 64-page magazine in less than a day.
